The Do's and Don'ts of Decorating For Christmas

If you haven’t been into Amanda’s House of Elegance recently, you must head in. It is a full on Christmas wonderland and is sure to get you into the Christmas spirit. We are sure many of you are starting to think about decorating for Christmas and we are here to help! Not only do we have a plethora of elegant Christmas options for every room in your home, we have lots of tips and tricks to turn your space into a Christmas wonderland as well. Here are our favourite do’s and don’ts for the season.

  1. Do you hate clutter? Stick to decorating the mantel and banisters on your stairwell to get a huge impact without cluttering your home. These locations add instant Christmas appeal without making your home feel crowded or cluttered. If you have small children or pets, these locations also are out of reach for the smaller occupants of the home.

  2. Use seasonal elements to allow your decor to last longer! By incorporating decor that is winter themed versus Christmas themed, you can start decorating earlier and leave your decor up longer. We all love Christmas decor, and are not telling you to skip the Christmas theme, but having a mixture of both will do you better in the long run.

  3. Be thoughtful an deliberate. By putting thought into all the spaces in your home, you will end up loving your decor for the happiest season of the year. Start thinking about your decor early and give yourself some time to wrap your head around colours and styles you like.

  4. Use lots of lights! Lights are the easiest way to get big impact on Christmas. Incorporate twinkly lights and candles into your decor and you are sure to end up with a beautiful Christmas display.

  5. Personalize your space. Don’t feel pressured to stick to one idea of Christmas, Decorate with whatever speaks to you. We love seeing personalized Christmas displays, this is also a great way to incorporate some of your kids and loved ones pieces into the home.

  1. Don’t limit yourself to red and green. Christmas is a time for lots of colour to be incorporated and we want you to get inventive. We love seeing blues, golds, whites and silvers in all kinds of Christmas decor but truly any colour can be incorporated into your home. Your current home decor can be a great jumping off point for your holiday decor.

  2. Don’t expect things to be perfect. Perfection is not possible, and this is a don’t for all things holiday related, not just decor. Give yourself some time to relax and enjoy the holidays!

  3. Don’t shy away from the classics. Who doesn’t love a garland and some poinsettias? While Christmas is a great season for experimenting with decorations, we love the tested and true classics that fill your home with those warm and fuzzy feelings.

  4. Don’t overcrowd. Sometimes the simpler, the better. Take your time deciding what areas of your home should be busier than others, but don’t feel the need to add space filling decor to all areas.

We have so much more holiday content to come in the next couple of months! Happy Holidays and let the fun begin.

8 Ways to Design a Happier Home

Your home is your haven, and you deserve to be happy in it, no matter how much money you make, how big your space is, or how much you know or don't know about decorating. The good news is there are tiny tweaks you can make to boost your mood in your house, and none of them cost a fortune. Some of them are scientific, so you might not even understand how or why the happy hits you. Just go with it—and the rest of these strategies for feeling your best in your nest.

One: Colour Everywhere

Okay, maybe not everywhere, because there's something to be said for serene neutrals and using a little bit of restraint when you decorate. But high energy shades like yellow and green have been shown to make people happier and more productive. These hues are tricky to get right as wall colors, but it's definitely doable. Don't discount the effect a new lemon-colored throw or emerald desk lamp could have either. Bigger isn't always better when it comes to color.

Two: Make Your Bed

Making your bed is the easiest way to start your day off on the right foot. You get something productive done right away that sets you up for success later that night. The last thing you see before hitting the hay shouldn't be a disheveled mess of sheets and pillows. You'll be happier for making it in the morning. Promise.

Three: Light Your World

On the whole, you're probably more smiley on sunny days as opposed to cloudy ones, right? Well, harness that happy by letting as much natural light into your home as possible. Trade out heavier drapery for sheers or go entirely without window treatments if privacy isn't an issue. Open up your windows when you can. And if you don't get a ton of sunlight in your space, fake it with an OttLite Wellness lamp, which features LED technology that's as close to the sun's output as possible. And try this trick—swap out your living room lights with pink bulbs, which make it seem like you're looking at the world through rose-colored glasses, literally.

Four: Be a Proud Plant Parent

Studies suggest that surrounding yourself with greenery can boost your mood and decrease your stress levels. Can't forest bathe in your neighborhood or turn your sunroom into a greenhouse? That's okay. Buy a couple of succulents for your windowsill or a fern for your shower. And if you're a total black thumb, bring in some crystals or shells. You can't exactly nurture those guys, but even a tiny touch of nature may make you a little more zen.

Five: Look For Furniture With Softer Edges

Pieces with round edges are much more soothing to the eye than boxy, angular shapes. Just bought a squared-off sofa? No worries. Just add some cozy, cushy throw pillows to break up the hard lines. Texture is key. Anything chunky knit will do.

Six: Trick Out Your Bathroom For “Me Time”

Treat yourself by turning your bathroom into self-care central. Get one of those across-the-tub caddies if you have the room for it or a shelf for a plant, your wine glass, and a piece of art that makes you smile. Maybe write an affirmation on your mirror in lipstick or dry erase marker if you're into that kind of thing.

Seven: Find a Happy Scent For Your Home

Smell is a very powerful tool and can often elicit memories from the depths of your mind. Think of something you have a positive association with—maybe it's the ocean, where you first learned to swim. Or a pine scent that reminds you of summer camp. Whatever it may be, start layering it around your home. Candles are an obvious choice, but consider an ultrasonic diffuser as well, especially if you have kids or pets. Pilgrim's Zoemodel ($120) works with essential oils and even has a built-in meditation light, if you really want to let the good vibes flow.

Eight: Get Rid of Clutter

File this one under "duh." But really. Ever wonder why you feel so relaxed at a hotel? Nice linens and a big fluffy robe help, though I'm inclined to think the totally clear surfaces are a big part of that "ahhhh" feeling. When your stuff isn't closing in on you, life just feels a little less overwhelming. Biggest takeaway here: "Everything in its place, and a place for everything." So toss what you don't need, and try to put things away when you're done using them. That way, you won't have a major organizing crisis on your hands at the end of the each week.

When its cold outside, sometimes the only thing getting you through the day is the knowledge that you can get nice and cozy once you get home. There are some very easy tactics that can be used in order to add warmth and design to your home. Adding a few rugs to your space is one of these tactics. Having a warm, soft surface under foot adds so much character and keeps the house warmer all at the same time. Here are some great rug options available at Amanda’s House of Elegance that will be perfect in your home for the fall and winter and then can easily transition to the warmer months.

The Perfect Neutrals

These neutral beauties will add warmth and comfort to your space without adding too much of a statement. Even though the patterns are bold, the neutral colour palette keeps these rugs an easy statement for any home. These are great for spaces already in a neutral palette, space with colourful palettes and also spaces with wall to wall carpeting to achieve a layered effect. If you are unsure what rug would suit your space, bring in photos to Amanda’s House of Elegance and we would be happy to help.

We love the colours in these options and think they could be a perfect purchase for your home. Sometimes a pop of colour is what is needed to really liven up a room.

Falling For Fall: Slowly Bringing Autumn Decor Into Your Home

With fall colours and temperature fast approaching, for better or worse, Amanda’s House of Elegance is ready to solve all of your fall decor needs! We suggest slowly transitioning your home’s decor to including fall colours and pieces that match the changing exterior. Come down to House of Elegance to fall in love with autumn once again!

Gold Is Fall Approved

If we had to assign a colour to the seasons, autumn would definitely be gold. Everywhere you look in the fall season you see warm hues of reds, oranges and gold’s. It is not a secret that gold in very on trend and at House of Elegance we are very on the gold train for injecting some autumn decor into your space. A gold touch here and there will add warmth and light to your home and we would love to show you how.

Let’s Bring The Outside In

Let’s be honest, there is nothing better then being outdoors in the autumn season. All of the leaves changing colours and the crisp, clean skies during the day, some may call it magical. Bring this feeling into your home by bringing in the colours of the changing leaves, greenery, and natural woods and stone. The feeling that fall brings needs to be brought inside and this can be easily achieved through your choice of decor. Perhaps a natural wood tray to display some festive pieces, or natural stone candle holders would truly bring the outside in.

Spice Up Your Space

And by adding “spice” I mean adding warmth to your space! The best way to do this is through warm candles and scents throughout your home. At Amanda’s House of Elegance, we love WoodWick candles for so many reasons. Not only are they made in a variety of fall approved colours and scents such as autumn, pumpkin pecan and warm wool (even the names provoke feelings of fall!), their wicks crackle as they burn bringing a fireplace feel into any room.

Elegant Pumpkins

While natural pumpkins themselves can be beautiful as a decor element, since we are only halfway through September, it may be a tad too early to invest in the real thing. Pumpkins are a true symbol of fall, and we think they can be used in an elegant way all through the autumn season. At Amanda’s House of Elegance we have some great alternative to the tradition Halloween pumpkin that are both elegant and that will inject some fall into your home.

Fall In Love with Autumn Textures and Patterns

There is nothing better then cozying up in the fall with a big chunky blanket and some beautiful pillows. Now that September is here and the temperatures outside will be slowly dropping, its time to replace your cottons and linen’s with wools and luxurious velvet fabrics. Pick out prints that highlight the colour tones in your house and also inspire warmth in your home. Plaids and rich hued florals are great for autumn.

At House of Elegance, we love bright and beautiful floral arrangements especially when paired in one of our stunning vases. Now that the colours and temperature of the season is changing, its time to change up those flowers and add in richer hues and fall flowers to the mix. We love adding in fall foliage, sprays that add colour and texture and some greenery to tie it all together.

Materials 101: All in the details

Let's talk materials. I am personally addicted to soft, dreamy, beautiful fabrics and materials. Whether I am picking out the perfect pillow for my bed, choosing a soft, cozy blanket to cuddle up with, or even choosing out my favourite winter sweater, the first thing to do it pick the item up and feel the texture, quality and weight of the fabric. I also love the rainbow that is cast across my room when the light hits the crystal lamp on my bedside table. The beauty is in the details.

 Crystal Candle Pillar (small) - $56.95 (medium) - $63.95, Blue Chevron Throw - $98.95, Gold Placemat - $23.95, Linen Napkin - $43.95, Silver Coral Napkin Ring - $14.95, Champagne Lumbar Pillow - $74.95, White Pleated Pillow - $48.95

Personal Staycation: Tips for Staging the Master Bedroom

The master bedroom is meant to be the haven of the home. A place to get away from responsibilities, housework, or kids. It is also a place where many hours are spent, so staging this space to be appealing for the buyer is a must. Here are some do's for staging your master bedroom:

  1. Create an emphasis on natural lighting; keep window dressings neutral and non obstructive. These shutter style blinds work well, using fabric blinds and sheers is also a high impact solution.
  2. Art, Pillows, Plants, Throws! This room has it all. While you don't want a plethora of decor, a large piece of art, some fun throw pillows and a live plant add life and interest to the bedroom.
  3. This bedroom used both the intricate overhead lighting and large framed art piece to its advantage.  Suddenly A lovely focal point is established.
  4. The lack of clutter is appealing to buyers, it allows them to imagine their belongings in the room.
  5. A form of seating, ie. a bench, some stools, or a chaise, is a positive addition to the foot of any bed. They act as a place to sit, put on shoes, or as a lounge.
  1. This bedroom has a great neutral colour palette. The soft grey walls combined with black accents are a neutral place to begin any room.
  2. Creating small vignettes create moments of interest and good feelings within the space. Like the vignette on the bedside table, they can add a detailed touch.
  3. This headboard is a high impact focal point which is great for drawing buyers into the space.
  4. When staging a bedroom, the bed is the most important piece to the room. Spend a bit of extra time making the bed look extra inviting and luxurious through comfortable, light coloured  bedding, soft throws and lots of pillows.
  5. Overhead lighting can make the room appear both less cluttered and larger; attributes that are appealing to buyers.
  1. The use of mirrors to spread light through the room are great for making a room seem larger.
  2. Keep the colour scheme within a bedroom consistent. The use of blues, beige and wood tones through this bedroom create a calming mood.

Overall the master bedroom is meant to be an inviting and relaxing space. You want potential buyers to step in and feel like the space could be a place for them to retreat and find peace. By taking care of all downfalls of the space before showing, you can prevent any buyer from trying to negotiate down the price. Use neutral colours and decor to enhance the imaginations of the buyers, you want them to be able to imagine themselves there. Simple and clean is key!

Heart of the Home: Tips to Stage Your Kitchen

The kitchen is considered to be the heart of the home. Home owners will often spend a majority of their budgets designing and executing their ideal kitchen. It is a make or break item in the house when it comes to closing the deal, so showing a great kitchen is a big step towards selling your home. If you are the seller, it is not necessary to pay large amounts of money to make your kitchen desirable. With these staging tips and tricks, you can make your kitchen one that will sell.

Before you start the staging process, there are some things to think about regarding your space and the best way to present the kitchen. Use these questions to then better stage your space.

  • What are the key elements to highlight in the space?
  • Is the space both welcoming and functional?
  • What are the spaces biggest downfalls?
  • What functions of the space are the best features?

1. First and foremost make it sparkle. Having a clean and well kept kitchen is a huge key to giving the impression of high quality materials and well maintained appliances. Even if the kitchen is on the older side, scrubbing the kitchen from top to bottom will make a huge difference. Here are some tips and reminders for cleaning the kitchen before a showing:

  • Scrub the baseboards and vacuum up all the dust bunnies in the corners
  • Clean all fixtures, including any knobs, pulls or faucets, dust the ceiling fans or vents, replace any bulbs that may have burned out
  • Check to make sure nothing in your kitchen is releasing a bad odour. This includes taking out the garbage the day of your showing to prevent any future odours
  • Clean up any dirty dishes from your sink as well as remove anything from the dishwasher. Buyers will take a look in all of your appliances
  • Wipe down the fronts of all your cabinet
  • Clean the inside and outside of your fridge. Remove any photos, papers and magnets from the face and both sides
  • Give your stove and oven a good clean. If you have it in your budget, get your oven and stove top professionally cleaned, it will look brand new

2. It's time to declutter and edit your kitchen down to the basics. This means taking away personal elements, meaning photographs and the many knick knacks that may be laying around. Try to keep decor clean and simple, this is achieved through clean countertops, and a lack of clutter. Its better to clear everything off and then start building back slowly.

3. Now its time to start staging the kitchen to sell.

Some more tips for staging your kitchen...

  1. Stick to a colour scheme. Use the colours already present in your kitchen (countertops, cabinets, wall colour) and then add one or two accent colours through your decor. Materials such as wood and stone also add an abundance of texture and interest without coming across as overwhelming.
  2. Use revenant decor to create vignettes in the kitchen. Stick to just one or two, but having a bowl of fruit, a cookie jar, or a table setting can go a long way to giving a potential buyer a better idea of living in the space.
  3. Make sure all the needs of a kitchen are met! Does your island have stools or chairs around it where applicable? Do you have a spot for an island but no island? Are all areas of the kitchen well lit? Find solutions to these problems if they are relevant to your home.
  4. Stick to simple and clean decor. You don't want the kitchen to appear over crowded or messy. The less you have in the space the larger it will feel.
  5. Add flowers or small plants to liven up the space and add some colour.
  6. Ensure that all drawers, appliances, pantries and cupboards are clean on the inside and outside. Potential buyers will most likely want to look in ever space to see how it could function for them.
